I am a big fan of the website Double X, and its blogs. Here’s a great blog entry about some recent national articles about happiness and parenting. And here is one of the original articles from the New York Times Magazine. I find the NYTM article breathtaking, comforting, sweet, and baffling. Prevailing research seems to indicate that parenting adds more stress than happiness to the lives of parents. Yet, most parents insist children make them happy. One crucial observation: parenthood adds not so much joy to our lives, as it does a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves, and to the future. Having children is one way to exist beyond our deaths. Our DNA and our impact on the lives of our children live on long after we’re gone.
